This website tells the remarkable story of building the Mecklenburg memorial to honor local veterans and to document the history of our involvement in the Vietnam War. The granite panels tell of advisors, troops, presidents, military units, firefights, coups, landing zones, casualties, air strikes, demonstrations, peace talks, evacuations and much more. Most importantly those who died are forever honored in a beautiful place under massive oaks near uptown Charlotte.
We hope you will visit the memorial in person; walk the 270-foot granite arc while reading the historical timeline; view a map of Southeast Asia during the war; honor the names of those from Mecklenburg County who died; experience the war through the poems of a Vietnam veteran; and, pause to reflect at the American and POW/MIA flags.
Be sure to check this website for announcements about activities at the memorial, local veterans’ events and educational programs about the Vietnam War.
